A handmade product description that sells tells people, in a few lines, what the piece is, what it is made of, how big it is, how to look after it and why no other piece is exactly the same. No inflated adjectives: online, nobody can pick the object up, so the listing has to answer before the question gets asked.
At your stall you describe a piece out loud: you turn the mug, let people feel the weight. Online, the text does that job: if the same questions keep landing in your messages, the listing is not answering them yet. This guide, updated in September 2026, goes field by field.
What a handmade product description needs to include
Seven pieces of information, in the order a buyer asks for them. It is not just style: Article 49 of the Italian Consumer Code requires distance sellers to state the main characteristics of the goods before the purchase.
- Title: what it is, what material, one trait that sets it apart.
- First line: what it is for or who it is for.
- Three-line story: how you make it, how long it takes, why that way.
- Size: in centimetres, with weight or capacity where it matters.
- Materials: precise names, not generic ones.
- Care: how to wash it, where to keep it, what to avoid.
- Uniqueness: what changes from one piece to the next.
To show how much work sits behind a piece, see explaining the value of handmade.
The title: what it is, what it is made of, what sets it apart
The formula is object + material + distinctive trait, plus a measurement when it helps. It is the first line people read everywhere: in your shop, on the product page and in the WhatsApp link preview.
- Not "Mug" but "Hand-glazed stoneware mug, sage green, 300 ml".
- Not "Boho earrings" but "Hammered brass hoop earrings, 3 cm".
- Not "Handmade bag" but "Vegetable-tanned leather crossbody bag, 25 cm".
On Handsome a title can run to 120 characters, but 40 to 70 is enough; the dashboard itself suggests "Hand-glazed stoneware vase, 18 cm" instead of "Vase". Drop "unique", "stunning" and the all-caps: the distinctive trait should be a checkable fact. If it really is the only one, set the quantity to 1: the page says "One of a kind" on its own.
The first line and the story in three lines
The first line says what the piece is for or who it is for; the next three lines say how you make it.
On a Handsome product page, past 120 words the description folds behind "Read more": the first lines are the only ones everyone reads. For the story, three questions are enough:
- How it is made: the technique, in plain words. "Thrown on the wheel and dip-glazed", not "the fruit of a skilful artisanal process".
- How long it takes: drying days, firings, hours of stitching. Time is the simplest proof of the work.
- Why this way: the choice and the reason. A wider handle because it is easier to hold, washed linen because it needs no ironing.
Write the way you talk at your stall, in short sentences. In the description a blank line starts a new paragraph, lines starting with a dash become a list, and two asterisks on each side of a word make it bold: use them for phone readability, not decoration.
Size, materials and care: the three questions that always come
Write them with precise numbers and names, in three separate fields: they are what handmade buyers ask first. On Handsome they appear on the page as a small table, always in the same place.
- Size and weight (up to 120 characters): centimetres, capacity in ml, weight when it matters. "H 9 cm, Ø 8 cm, 300 ml, 350 g" says more than any adjective.
- Materials (up to 200): the precise name. Stoneware or majolica, not "ceramic"; sterling silver or brass, not "metal"; washed linen, not "natural fabric".
- Care (up to 300): instructions people can follow. "Dishwasher safe", "Hand wash in cold water, dry flat".
If something does not apply, leave the field empty: only filled-in rows appear. Photos help with proportions too: see photographing handmade products with a smartphone.
Signing up is free. Once your VAT number is verified and Stripe is connected, write your first listing, even as a draft.
Open your free Handsome profileThe irregularities of handmade: how to present them as value
State them upfront and precisely: what varies from piece to piece and what stays the same. Said that way, they prove the work is handmade; discovered on arrival, they look like a flaw.
The stock line about "small imperfections" convinces nobody. Detail does: "the glaze darkens where it pools, so the colour varies from mug to mug".
There is a concrete reason too: under Article 129 of the Italian Consumer Code, goods must match the description in the contract. Your listing is the yardstick the buyer uses to judge what arrives.
How to describe a handmade product: a before-and-after example
The same piece, written two ways. This is an invented example, not the listing of a real Maker.
Beautiful artisan mug, handmade with so much love. One of a kind, perfect as a gift! Colours of nature. Message me for info.
— Before: the version to avoid
It leaves out size, material and whether it is dishwasher safe: every question becomes a message, and many people never send it. The same mug, field by field:
- Title: Hand-glazed stoneware mug, sage green, 300 ml
- Description: A large mug for a long coffee or afternoon tea, with a wide handle you can hold with three fingers. I throw it on the wheel, let it dry for a week and fire it twice: the second firing sets the sage-green glaze, which darkens where it is thickest. So every mug has shades of its own.
- Size and weight: H 9 cm, Ø 8 cm, 300 ml, 350 g
- Materials: high-fired stoneware, glossy glaze
- Care: dishwasher safe; avoid sharp changes in temperature
The second version answers those questions in advance and says why this mug differs from its twin. It also makes the price clearer: see working out the price of a handmade product.
The English version: for travellers and buyers abroad
If tourists or foreign customers look for your work, it is worth the effort. On Handsome the English version is optional, with fields for title, description, materials and care; size is shared, since "H 9 cm" reads the same everywhere. Left empty, the English page shows the Italian text.
- Do not translate word for word: rewrite in short, plain sentences.
- Explain words not everyone knows abroad, such as "maiolica" or "tombolo".
- Get the care lines right: "hand wash only" or "not dishwasher safe" are understood at a glance.
How to fill in a product listing on Handsome, step by step
Handsome is the Italian marketplace for creative workshops where, since 18 September 2026, every eligible Maker can also sell their pieces from the shop on their profile. The form already has every field in this guide:
- Title with the formula object + material + distinctive trait (120 characters at most).
- Description: first line, story, irregularities (up to 4,000 characters). The dashboard counts characters and shows 300 as the mark to pass.
- Size and weight (120), Materials (200), Care (300).
- Price (1 to 10,000 euros) and quantity (0 to 999 pieces).
- Up to 6 real photos of the piece: you need at least one to publish.
- If you like, the English version.
- Save as a draft to reread, or publish.
To open the Products section, even just for drafts, you need an Italian VAT number verified by Handsome and a connected Stripe account; to publish, you also accept the selling terms once in the dashboard. Apprentices, with no VAT number, can run workshops but not sell products. See VAT number, Stripe and five free listings.
The free plan keeps five pieces online at a time, with unlimited drafts. Handsome takes no commission: what remains is Stripe's own fee on card payments, shown on Stripe's pricing page. More in selling handmade products online with zero commission.
Checklist before you publish
Reread the listing as a stranger would.
- Does the title alone make clear what it is?
- Does the first line say what it is for or who it is for?
- Is there a detail on how you make it or how long it takes?
- Do size, materials and care use precise names and numbers?
- Have you said what varies from piece to piece?
- Have you removed "unique", "stunning" and the exclamation marks?
- Is the text free of phone numbers, emails and social handles? Handsome will not save a listing that contains them.
The shop sits inside your profile, next to your bio: look after both. Then take the link where people already look for you, starting with Instagram.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
- How long should a handmade product description be?
- Long enough to answer a buyer's questions: for many pieces, 80 to 200 words of story, plus size, materials and care in their own fields. On Handsome the dashboard shows 300 characters as the mark to pass, and past 120 words the page adds "Read more", so key facts go first.
- What should I write about a handmade product?
- What it is, what it is made of, one trait that sets it apart, what it is for, how you make it, its size and its care, plus what varies from piece to piece. Skip generic adjectives like "unique": a checkable detail, such as making time, convinces more than any compliment.
- How do I write the title of a handmade product?
- Use the formula object + material + distinctive trait, with a measurement when it helps: "Hand-glazed stoneware mug, sage green, 300 ml". Stay between 40 and 70 characters even though Handsome allows 120: the title also shows in the preview of a shared link.
- How should I describe the imperfections of handmade work?
- By saying exactly what varies and why: glaze that shifts tone where it is thicker, dye done in small batches. Written before the purchase, variations become proof of handwork. A real defect, such as a crack, is different: that piece is better kept off the online shop.
- Can I sell my products on Handsome without a website?
- Yes. The shop is a section of your public Handsome profile: no domain, theme or cart to set up. Signing up is free; to sell you need a verified Italian VAT number, a connected Stripe account and the selling terms accepted. The free plan covers five published pieces at a time, with no Handsome commission.
A good listing promises nothing: it answers. Draft yours, check it against the list and publish when it says everything you would say at your stall.
