Selling on Instagram without a website: why DMs cost you more than you think

Yes, you can sell on Instagram without a website: one photo, one direct message, one bank transfer. The catch is that the "free" part gets paid in time, in orders you never notice losing, and in money that leaves no record. Instagram is a great shop window. It is not a till.

Let me be fair first: for a craft workshop, Instagram is the tool that works best. Photos beat words and the process beats the finished piece: you have both on your bench every day. The problem is not Instagram. The problem is asking it to do the job it cannot do: take payment, keep the books, stay browsable.

Why Instagram genuinely works

There is one reason: the audience is warm. People who follow you have already watched your hands work and recognise your glaze without reading the name. When you post a new piece you are not introducing yourself to a stranger: you are answering someone who was waiting and recognises the piece without needing it explained, which is not what happens inside a general catalogue.

And there is no visible cost: no subscription, nothing to pay in order to post, nothing to sign. That is true and worth saying. The bill simply arrives through a different door.

The hidden costs of selling in the DMs

Then the message lands: "Is this still available?" From there begins the part that never shows up in your metrics and that nobody counts as work.

  • Time in the chat. Ten or fifteen exchanges per sale: availability, size, shipping, address, payment confirmation. Usually spread over two or three days, phone in hand and clay on your fingers.
  • Payment by hand. You send your bank details, you wait, you check the account, you write "got it". If the buyer changes their mind in between, you have lost the sale and you will never know why.
  • No paper trail. A transfer with a vague reference is not an order: no accounting line, no document ready, and at the end of the month you reconcile it from memory.
  • A post is not a product page. No price field, no stock, no cart and no payment: it has a caption. Whoever finds it has to message you to ask if it is there.
  • The feed moves on. A story lasts twenty-four hours and a post ends up under the newer ones. Your catalogue should stay browsable, not slide away.
  • Reach is not yours to decide. How much a piece of content gets shown is decided by the platform, and it can change without notice.

The tax side deserves an extra line. If you sell with an Italian VAT number you have to issue the document your regime requires, and a sale born and buried inside a conversation leaves none of what you need afterwards. The reference is the Agenzia delle Entrate portal; for the rest there is invoices and receipts.

An Instagram account is not yours the way your workshop is yours: it can be suspended or limited without you being able to do anything. If your catalogue and your contacts live only there, you are building on rented ground.

What a sale in the chat really costs

Two example numbers, deliberately kept low. Twenty minutes of chat per sale, counting messages, payment checks and an address copied by hand. Fifteen sales a month is five hours: a full day at the wheel. It is not a measurement, it is a sum you can redo with your own numbers. And you see it nowhere, because nobody invoices you for your own time.

Then comes the part that stings: the orders that never happened. The message you reread three days later. The person who asked the price at eleven at night and had bought elsewhere by nine in the morning. They show up in no report: they simply never took place. The piece-by-piece comparison is in what it costs to sell a piece online.

Instagram as the shop window, Handsome as the till

The answer is not to quit Instagram: you would lose the one thing you have genuinely built, the people who follow you. The answer is to give each tool the job it is good at. Instagram attracts and tells the story, a sales page takes the money and keeps the record. Your job becomes one: moving your followers from one to the other with a link.

On Handsome, products are open to every eligible Maker since 18 September 2026, and Handsome keeps no commission. The payment is a direct charge on your own Stripe account: the money is yours and it lands there, and the only cost is the standard fee Stripe charges on payments. You connect the Stripe account once, with the usual identity verification. We collect the shipping address; the cost and the free-shipping threshold are set by you from the dashboard.

The practical difference is where the pieces end up. Your public profile and your workshop pages are indexed, so people do reach them by searching. The product shop window lives inside that profile: it is seen by whoever opens the profile, whoever clicks the link you sent in a chat, whoever reads the card in the parcel. There is one link, and the pieces stay there long after the story has gone. On profile and search there is getting found on Google without a website.

To sell products you need a verified VAT number, a connected Stripe account and acceptance of the sales Terms. Apprentices without a VAT number use the rest of the platform but do not sell products. The free plan holds 5 published pieces, drafts are unlimited; with Handsome Pro, 9.90 euro a month or 95 euro a year with a 30-day free trial and no card required, the cap disappears.

Free sign-up, about 15 minutes. Five published pieces included, zero commission.

How to do it in one afternoon

  1. Photograph and publish your five best pieces, with sizes, materials and shipping times.
  2. Put the direct link to your product page in your bio, not a generic address that makes people hunt for the piece.
  3. In your stories, stop writing "DM me" and write "link in bio", with the sticker pointing straight at the piece.
  4. When a message arrives anyway, reply in one line and attach the link: polite, quick, and you go back to the bench.
  5. Keep the chat for what it does best: real questions and custom orders.
  6. At the end of the month, count how many sales closed without you writing a single message.

If you also run classes, the loop closes on its own: someone who spent three hours in your workshop knows your work better than someone arriving from a photo. We go through it in workshops and products together. On workshops too we keep no commission: for a group class the deposit is 10 euro per seat, with free cancellation up to 3 days before; for a private session the deposit is 25 euro and cancellation runs up to 7 days before. You take the balance on site.

What this change does not fix

I want to be clear, because inflated promises do damage. Moving the till does not bring you new customers by itself: the audience still arrives from your photos, from word of mouth, from someone who saw you at a market. It guarantees you nothing about what you sell. What it does is remove the friction that costs you orders and hours today, and leave a record of what you sell. The picture on commissions is in selling handmade products with no commission; on classes, the comparison is in Instagram and WhatsApp versus Handsome.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell my products on Instagram without having a website?
Yes: you post the photo, you get the message, you agree on payment and you ship. It works, but everything stays manual: no recorded order, no document ready for your accountant, no stable page carrying price and availability. The simplest route is to keep Instagram as the shop window and put the payment on a sales page.
How much time does selling in DMs cost me?
Here is an example sum, not a measurement: if one sale takes twenty minutes across availability, sizes, shipping and payment checks, and you close fifteen a month, that is five hours. Redo the sum with your own numbers.
Do I need a VAT number to sell products on Handsome?
Yes. You need a verified Italian VAT number, a connected Stripe account and acceptance of the sales Terms. Apprentices without a VAT number can sign up and use the rest of the platform, but cannot sell products. Product selling has been open to all eligible Makers since 18 September 2026.
How much does Handsome keep on each piece I sell?
Nothing. The payment is a direct charge on your own Stripe account and no share stays with us. The only cost is the standard fee Stripe charges on payments, the same one you would pay selling from your own site: rates are on Stripe's pricing page.
How many products can I publish for free?
Five published pieces at a time, while drafts are unlimited. With Handsome Pro, 9.90 euro a month or 95 euro a year, the cap disappears and there is a 30-day free trial with no card required. If Pro lapses, the five most recent pieces stay online and the others revert to drafts: nothing is deleted.

Zero commission, shipping set by you, profile online in about 15 minutes.
