The workshops are still there: behind a half-lowered shutter, on the first floor of a building, in a shed at the end of a country road. The problem is not that they no longer exist. It is that they cannot be found — and someone passing through on holiday leaves without ever crossing the threshold of one.

Guides take them to museums. Algorithms send them to the same cooking school they've already seen on Instagram. We thought there had to be another way: open the door of the laboratory, let people sit at the bench, hand them the clay, the leather, the tools — and let the Maker do what the Maker does best: teach by doing.

Three hours later you leave with something in your hands that was not there in the morning. A bowl, a pair of earrings, a leather wallet, a recipe you can repeat at home. It is not a souvenir from a shelf. It is a piece of Italy you made, next to someone who has been making it for thirty years.

Right now Handsome has eighteen Makers in thirteen towns, working with clay, metal, textiles, paper, food and plants. That is a small number, and for now that is the point: I approve each profile by hand, after looking at what the person actually makes. I would rather have eighteen workshops I can vouch for than two hundred names in a list.
