Selling handmade products in Italy: what changes compared to global marketplaces

Selling your pieces in Italy is not a smaller version of selling worldwide. It is a different job. People who buy Italian craft write in Italian, expect short lead times and often live in your own province. On a global marketplace your vase sits in an endless list of near-identical vases. Here the distance between maker and buyer is short: every so often it ends with someone ringing the workshop doorbell.

Four concrete things change: where you put the link to your pieces, what shipping costs, who answers when a return arrives, and whether the buyer can come and collect. One at a time, with Handsome's real numbers and an official source for everyone else's.

People search by craft and by town

The biggest difference is not in the catalogue, it is in the search bar. On a global marketplace the words that bring traffic are English and generic: handmade mug, ceramic bowl, macramé wall hanging. In Italy the search is narrower and far more decided.

• Rest of the European Union: longer transit and VAT handled under the destination country's rules above certain thresholds. Check your own position on the Italian Revenue Agency site or ask your accountant.
• Outside the EU: a customs declaration, duties paid by the recipient, and returns that can cost more than the piece.
• Fragile work: the further a parcel travels, the more serious the packing has to be. A bowl that arrives cracked on the other side of the world costs you the piece, the postage and the person.

Returns, warranty and language: who answers when something goes wrong
