What to do in Rome as a couple: a workshop for two instead of the usual dinner

The problem with what to do in Rome as a couple is not a lack of options: it is that the options are always the same three. Dinner, drinks, a walk you have already taken twenty times. They are pleasant evenings and perfectly forgettable — in a month you will not remember which restaurant it was.

A workshop is different for one simple reason: you are doing something together, not watching something together. Two or three hours where neither of you is on the phone, where one of you is better at it and the other laughs, and where at the end there is an object that stays. It is not romantic in the classic sense. It is just an afternoon you will remember.

How it works, in practice

You book a date and a number of seats, exactly like a table. When booking you pay a 10 euro deposit per seat online; the rest is paid in the studio on the day, directly to the person running it. The price you see is the price you pay: no commissions or surcharges are added on top of the final figure.

If plans change, you can cancel free of charge up to 3 days before and the deposit comes back. After that it stays with the person running the workshop: they held two seats and bought materials.

Which one to choose: three questions, not twenty

How messy does it get?

It sounds like a silly question, but it is not. Wheel-thrown ceramics is wonderful and will leave clay everywhere: if you have dinner afterwards, it is the wrong choice. Embroidery, jewellery, perfumery and illustration are clean. Knowing in advance avoids the only real regret of these afternoons.

Do we take something home today?

This changes a lot. Some processes finish the same day: you leave with the object in your hand. Others, ceramics in particular, need firing: the piece is collected two or three weeks later. It is not a flaw — it is a second appointment — but you should know beforehand, especially if one of you does not live in Rome.

Just us, or a group?

A group workshop with six other people is cheaper and lighter: you chat, you laugh, you are not the centre of attention. A private session is just for the two of you, costs more and is the right choice for an anniversary or a proposal. Neither is better: it depends on the evening you want.

Do we need any skill?

No, and this is the question that stops most people. Workshops open to the public are designed for people who have never touched that material: the first two attempts are guided step by step. In fact the best moment of the day is nearly always the one where it goes wrong — and the wonky piece is the one you keep.

When to go in Rome

The weekend is the natural choice, but if you can manage a weekday, take it: groups are smaller, the person teaching has more time for you, and there is more room to breathe. In the warm months, evening sessions are more comfortable than early afternoon ones, especially in a studio where you are on your feet.

If it is a gift

A workshop works well as a gift for a practical reason: it takes no space at home and you cannot get the size wrong. What to avoid is picking a date without asking: better to give the experience and agree together when to go.
