Hen and stag parties in Rome: a workshop instead of the usual crawl

Whoever organises a hen party in Rome always has the same problem, and it is not choosing the venue: it is that the group is not homogeneous. There are the lifelong friends and the colleague, the thirty-year-old cousin and the aunt, the ones drinking and the one driving. An activity that works for half the group leaves the other half looking at their phones.

A craft workshop solves this, for a practical rather than romantic reason: it gives everyone something to do with their hands. Whoever knows nobody has an excuse to talk — they are learning the same thing as the person next to them — and whoever would normally hang back is occupied. At the end there is also an object each, which as a keepsake beats the sash with the slogan.

How many people a workshop really holds

The number makes more difference than anything else. Six to twelve is the band where a workshop works well: the person teaching can get round everyone and the group stays one thing. Above fifteen you need a second helper or the activity splits into two groups that do not talk to each other.

If you are more than fifteen, the right move is not to find a bigger studio: it is to choose a technique that copes with numbers — decorating, printing, perfumery — rather than one that needs individual attention, like the wheel.

Which craft to choose for a mixed group

• Perfumery. Everyone leaves with a fragrance of their own, no manual skill needed, you sit down and talk. It is the safest choice with a group where not everyone knows each other.
• Jewellery. A small, recognisable result you can wear the same day. It works well even with people who say they are no good at this.
• Hand-built ceramics (not the wheel). The wheel is spectacular but it is one at a time: with twelve people the other eleven are waiting. Hand-building works for everyone at once.
• Embroidery or weaving. Slow, very sociable, ideal for an afternoon with some wine. Less suitable if the group is in a hurry.

Cost per head

It depends on the craft and the materials, but the logic is always the same: the price in the listing is what you pay, with no commissions or surcharges added at the end. If you book a workshop open to the public, a 10 euro deposit per seat is paid on booking and the rest is settled in the studio on the day.

For a group this has an enormous practical advantage: you do not have to front the whole thing and then chase twenty people. Each person books their own seat and pays their own share.

If you want the studio just for you

This is the most common case for a hen party: you do not want six strangers in the room. Here you use the private events route: you say how many you are, the area, at least two possible dates and what kind of activity interests you. Two things to know about timing. The proposal is valid for 48 hours: after that the date is released, because in the meantime the Maker cannot sell it to anyone else. The mistakes that spoil the afternoon

1. Putting it too late in the programme. A workshop after a long lunch with wine does not land. Earlier is better: it is the moment the group loosens up, not the moment it rests.
2. Not telling the bride what the activity is. The surprise is nice, but if she is allergic to something or has just had her nails done you will find out at the worst moment. A vague hint about the type of activity is enough.
3. Booking for twenty and turning up as twelve. Whoever runs the workshop buys materials for the number you gave. Telling them the real number, even the day before, is the difference between a good relationship and a problem.
