Graduation party in Bologna: a private craft workshop for friends and family, instead of the usual dinner

A graduation party in Bologna can be a private craft workshop: two or three hours in a studio, just for your group, with an object everyone takes home. It works because it solves the real problem of that day: keeping parents, grandparents, coursemates and lifelong friends together, when they often do not know each other and have little to say across a dinner table. What graduation day looks like in Bologna

Bologna was a university city before the word existed: the University conventionally dates its own birth to 1088. The graduation ritual here has a precise shape. In the morning, or early afternoon, there is the proclamation in the exam room, where the committee announces the final mark; outside, family and friends wait with the laurel wreath, a hand-made poster and the chant of "dottore, dottore" that starts the moment the doors open. How far in advance to move

The proclamation date is known in advance, and graduation sessions concentrate many parties on the same days: a Saturday afternoon in a city-centre studio is the most contested slot. Think in weeks, not days, and remember that the Maker has to fit a private session into their own production calendar.

1. As soon as you have the proclamation date, send the request with at least two dates: the day itself and the following weekend, for instance. The exact headcount can come later.
2. When the proposal arrives, share it with whoever is organising with you and confirm within a few days: until the deposit is paid, the date is not locked.
3. In the last two weeks close the final headcount and pass on any needs: children, intolerances if you are cooking, who will arrive late from the proclamation.

If the graduation is only days away and there is no time for a private session, the alternative is booking places in a workshop already scheduled in Bologna: fixed time and other participants, but you book right away.

The beauty of a private session is that the programme is yours. Some personalisations almost always work; write them in the request, so Handsome passes them to the Maker and they come back already built into the proposal.

• The name on the object. In ceramics it is carved before firing; on fabric a stamp or screen is prepared with name and date; on the perfume bottle the label is written by hand.

• A toast in the studio. Some Makers let you bring a bottle and something to eat to close the session; others work in spaces where that is not possible. Ask beforehand, never on the day.
