How to photograph your studio to attract more customers

Your workshop cover photo is the first impression the customer has of your studio. Internal Handsome research shows workshops with good-quality photos have a booking rate 2.4× higher than those with generic or grainy photos. Here are 5 tested rules.

Rule 1: natural light, near a window

No ceiling lamps: they cast yellow light that distorts material colors. Shoot during the day, with the subject 1-2 meters from a large window (side light). The difference between a natural light photo and one with artificial lighting is 30-40% in perceived quality.

Rule 2: show hands at work

The photos that convert best don't show finished objects on a neutral table: they show HANDS in motion. Wheel in action, dough being shaped, needle stitching. Because the customer projects themselves into the action. Avoid static "finished product on white background" poses.

Rule 3: details + wide shots

Always upload at least 4: one wide shot of the studio (atmosphere), one close-up of hands (action), one of the finished product (result), one of the artisan teaching (humanity). On Handsome the minimum to publish is 1, but with 4-6 photos conversion doubles.

Rule 4: horizontal 16:9 format

Workshop cards on Handsome use 16:9 / 16:10 aspect ratio. A vertical photo (Instagram format) gets badly cropped and loses impact. Always shoot horizontal (landscape) for the main cover. Portfolio photos can also be square.

Rule 5: no heavy filters

A very saturated vintage filter or B&W can work for an Instagram post, but on a commercial listing it looks unprofessional. Stick to a light boost of contrast and saturation (+10/15 max). Let materials and light sell, not the filter.

If in doubt about a photo, apply the "3-second test": look at the preview for 3 seconds and ask "would I book?". If the answer is no, discard it.

Domande frequenti

Do I need to hire a professional photographer?
Not right away. Start with smartphone photos following the 5 rules. After your first 10 bookings, if you want to step up, a photo shoot costs €200-400 and lasts 1-2 years.
Can I use photos from past workshops?
Yes, as long as they are yours (no stock photos). Update photos every 6-12 months: new seasons, new attendees, new works produced.
Can I show attendees' faces?
Only with written consent (GDPR). For safety, use angles showing hands or backs. On Handsome we recommend photos without recognizable faces unless a release is signed.
How many photos can I upload at most?
On Handsome you can upload up to 10 photos per workshop. The system automatically shows the best one as cover; the others form a scrollable portfolio.
