Email marketing for artisans: first newsletter without spamming

Every attendee leaves your workshop pre-qualified: paid, met you in person, took home a hand-made object. They're a customer that with the right follow-up returns or brings friends. But if your only channel is Instagram, you're at the algorithm's mercy. Newsletter solves it: lands in the inbox, free (at least to start), and you own it. This guide gets you to your first campaign in 1-2 hours.

Free tools to start

  • Brevo: generous free plan, up to 300 emails/day. Automation included. Best for starting.
  • Mailchimp: free up to 500 contacts, 1,000 sends/month. Clean drag-and-drop editor.
  • Resend: free 3,000 emails/month. More technical but excellent deliverability.
  • MailerLite: free up to 1,000 contacts, 12,000 sends/month.

Collecting emails without spamming

  1. Explicit signup form on your site or Handsome page. Never pre-checked, never forced.
  2. Physical card in studio: A6 with check-box and signature. Valid GDPR consent.
  3. After each workshop: ask verbally. Note who said yes.
  4. NEVER collect from supplier lists, bought lists, attendees without consent.

GDPR basics without paranoia

  • Explicit consent at collection.
  • Privacy notice linked on form (free templates on garanteprivacy.it).
  • Unsubscribe link in every email (tools above add it automatically).

Frequency: monthly is enough

Most common mistake: zero emails for 6 months, then 4 in a week. Set a sustainable cadence: 1 newsletter/month works. Max 2 if you have a recurring workshop. More than 2 and unsubscribe rate explodes.

Email structure that converts

  1. Subject: concrete, 5-8 words. "Ceramics workshop - Saturday June 14, Faenza" beats "🌟 AMAZING! 🌟 New workshop!".
  2. Pre-header: second chance to say why open.
  3. Personal opening (50-80 words).
  4. Heart: ONE clear call to action. Don't mix "book" + "buy this piece" + "follow on IG".
  5. Valuable photo: 1-2 photos of the studio or past pieces (with attendee release!).
  6. Clean footer: who you are, where, unsubscribe.

Metrics to track (and ignore)

  • Open rate: artisan benchmark 30-45%. Below 20% means subject or list issue.
  • Click rate: target 3-7%. The real metric.
  • Unsubscribe per campaign: <0.5% healthy. >1% rework tone or frequency.

Make it real with Handsome

Domande frequenti

Can I use Handsome attendee emails for my newsletter?
Yes if they gave explicit consent to your newsletter (separate from the "book on Handsome" consent). Cleanest: at workshop end, send a message asking for explicit signup.
How long until I see results?
A 50-100 subscriber list converts 2-4 bookings per send if done well. Building 100 subscribers from zero with regular workshops takes 4-6 months.
