A children's birthday party in Rimini: how to hold it in a creative workshop

A children's birthday party in Rimini nearly always follows one of two scripts: the hall with the bouncy castles or the pizzeria with the entertainer. They work, and there is nothing wrong with them. But children remember them all as the same party, and parents go home with yet another bag of plastic gadgets.

A party in a creative workshop changes the part that matters: for an hour or so the children make something with their hands, and at the end each of them has their own object. A small clay bowl, a bracelet, a painted tote bag. It is the memory of the party and also the favour for the guests, made by the guests themselves.

Why a workshop works with children

A workshop has a beginning, a middle and an end, and children get it straight away: you start with a material that has no shape and finish with something to show. It holds very different children together, the one who never stops running and the shy one, because everyone works on their own piece and nobody has to win. And it leaves room for the adults: they can join in, help the little ones or simply watch, which rarely happens with an entertainer.

Which craft for which age

What can be done is decided by the Maker, who knows their materials. When a workshop is also suitable for children, the listing says so and often gives the age range («children too, from 6 to 12 years old», for example). As a rough guide before you ask:

From 4 to 6

Attention lasts for half an hour or three quarters of an hour of real work, then they need a change. Immediate activities work best, with big materials that are easy to grip: shaping clay by hand (no wheel), decorating a ready-made object, threading large beads, printing with sponges. One activity done well is better than three in a rush.

From 7 to 10

This is the age when they can follow steps and want a «grown-up» result. Coil or slab pottery, woven bracelets, a tote bag or T-shirt to decorate, a small terrarium, a watercolour of a subject they choose all work well. Here the Maker can really teach a technique, not just entertain.

From 11 up

Older children get bored with activities for little ones and light up with the ones that feel like a real craft: trying the potter's wheel, assembling a simple piece of jewellery, hand-printing a design, pouring a candle. With some techniques (hot wax, cutting tools) it is the Maker who says from what age it is possible and how to work safely.

How many children, how long, where

• How many: the request goes from 1 to 30 people. With younger children a group of eight to twelve is easier to follow; if the whole class is invited, say so, so the Maker can plan how to organise the work.
• How long: under six, an hour to an hour and a quarter of activity is enough; from seven upwards you can go to an hour and a half. Then come the cake and the candles.
• Where: in the Maker's studio, if there is room for everyone, or in a place of your own: your home, a hall, the venue where you have the party food. In the form you say whether you already have a venue (name and address); if you don't, the Maker suggests one.
• The adults: decide beforehand whether parents join in or wait. If they join in, count them in the number of people.
• Allergies and special needs: in the notes field write any allergies and intolerances, including to materials, and any accessibility needs. The Maker needs this information beforehand, not on the day of the party.

For a small party, three or four children with a parent, you do not need a private event: you can book seats on a workshop that is already scheduled.
