In Bologna, the right way to pick a creative workshop for children is to start from age, not from the craft. As a rule of thumb: from 3 to 5 short sensory activities work best, with an adult right there; from 6 to 10 a child can finish a whole object, and this is the band where a workshop pays off most; from 11 to 14 you need a real technique with a recognisable result. Everything else (how long it lasts, what to bring, whether the piece comes home the same day or after firing) depends mostly on the material.

What "Also suitable for children" means on a workshop page

When a Maker opens a workshop to younger participants, a dedicated line appears on the workshop page: "Also suitable for children from X to Y years". It is not a decorative badge: it is the age band the Maker states they can handle with that material and those tools.

• The minimum age is a safety limit, not a suggestion. Below it there are kilns, blades or glazes that are not to be handled.
• The maximum age tells you who the workshop speaks to. A 13-year-old in a workshop designed for 4-8 year olds gets bored in ten minutes.
• If the line is missing, the workshop is designed for adults. Better to message the Maker in chat before booking than to find out on the day.
• If a child price appears next to it, the child's seat has its own rate and the checkout total already accounts for it.
• In the workshops list you can filter on "Suitable for children" and see only the ones open to families.

Ages 3-5: hands, material, short sessions

At this age a workshop is not a lesson, it is an encounter with material. The child touches, squashes, makes a mess, and the satisfaction comes from the gesture more than from the result.

• What actually holds attention: soft clay, dough, colours, stamp printing, fabric. Anything that changes shape under their hands.
• Realistic duration: the actual working time is much shorter than the advertised one. A short session with a break in the middle works better than a long one without.
• Accompanying adult: always present, and hands-on. At three years old the adult is half the workshop.
• Avoid: kilns, blades, hot glass, resins. If the Maker sets a higher minimum age, there is a technical reason.

Ages 6-10: the band where a workshop pays off most

This is where a craft workshop gives its best. The child has enough dexterity to use a tool, can follow a sequence of steps and, above all, wants to finish the object.

• What holds attention: coil-built or wheel-thrown pottery, mosaic, woodwork, simple jewellery, cooking, printing and bookbinding.
• Ideal structure: a short explanation, then hands in the material for almost all of the time. If the theory runs past ten minutes, you lose them.
• Accompanying adult: useful, not always required. Several Makers accept children on their own in this band, but check the event page.
• Siblings of different ages: ask in chat first. A five-year-old and a nine-year-old at the same table only work if the Maker has planned two levels.

Ages 11-14: they need a real technique

A pre-teen does not want to "make a craft project": they want to learn something adults do. If the workshop is pitched too low, they shut down in two minutes and go back to their phone.

• What holds attention: the potter's wheel, engraving, leatherwork, screen printing, weaving, illustration, technical cooking, repair.
• A recognisable result is essential: a mug, a small bag, a print. Not a souvenir.
• Independence: at this age an adult hovering is a problem. Better if the adult books their own seat and works on their own piece.
• Group: it works better with peers. At a table full of six-year-olds the experience drops by itself.

Does the piece come home right away or after firing?

This is the question parents ask afterwards, and it ruins the afternoon when it was not asked before. It depends on the material.

• Comes home right away: cooking, textiles, wood with cold finishes, illustration, mosaic on a ready base, cold-worked jewellery, candles and soaps.
• Comes later: ceramics and glass. The piece has to dry, be fired and often glazed and fired again. That means weeks, not hours.
• How you collect it: some Makers ask you to come back to the studio, others ship at the customer's expense. Ask in chat before booking.
• With small children it matters a lot: at four years old, "you'll get it in three weeks" is not a satisfying answer.

Who comes along and what to bring

• Clothes that can get ruined. Aprons are almost always provided, but glazes and dyes are unforgiving.
• Long hair tied back, no wide sleeves near stoves, wheels or presses.

• Materials and use of the studio: clay, glazes, yarn, ingredients, plus kiln, wheels and space. With ceramics the work continues after you have left, because the piece has to be fired and often glazed.
• The Maker's time and any child price: guiding six children is not the same as running a course for adults, and some Makers set a dedicated rate for minors.
