Workshops for international travelers: how to prepare and sell more

Between April and October organic traffic on Handsome is made up 40-50% of international travelers (US, UK, DE, FR, NL). They are the most profitable segment: higher average budget per person, they book in advance, and they review more often and with higher ratings than the local audience. But you need to welcome them in a specific way.

How much English you actually need

You don't need C1. 40-50 base sentences about your craft are enough: practical commands ("now we add water", "press here"), tool and material names, safety phrases ("please be careful with the fire"), greetings and thank-yous. Most travelers who book a workshop in Italy speak B1-B2 English and expect the same from you.

On Handsome you can list spoken languages in your profile. Even "English: basic" is honest and attracts those who want an authentic experience over a polished tour guide.

What international travelers are looking for

  • Authenticity: not a postcard set, they want YOUR real studio.
  • Story: they often ask how many generations your family has done this — prepare a 60-second version.
  • Photos: they expect to be able to photograph the process (our privacy rule does not require written consent if photos are for personal use).
  • Tangible souvenir: the object they take home must be unique and identifiable (signature, date, packaging).
  • Online payment: they pay much more readily if the deposit is online (Stripe). On site they prefer card or Apple Pay over cash.

Bio and workshop description in English

On Handsome the bio_en and descrizione_en fields are separate from the Italian ones. Invest 30 minutes filling them well: a traveler searching for "pottery workshop in Florence" on Google finds polished English profiles first. If you don't feel comfortable translating, use DeepL or ChatGPT then have an English-speaking friend proofread.

Pricing: no surcharge for foreigners

The price must be identical for Italians and foreigners (Italian Consumer Code art. 22 bans differentiation). What you CAN do: create a "Premium experience in English" workshop slightly longer or with extras (e.g. aperitif at the end, gift packaging) at a higher price, which naturally attracts the international segment.

Reviews in English: how to encourage them

English reviews have a double effect: they help other travelers choose, and they boost your international SEO ranking. After the workshop, thank them explicitly and remind them they'll receive an email to review (part of the Handsome automated flow). A short phrase "if you have 60 seconds, your review really helps me" doubles the response rate.

Domande frequenti

Should I accept last-minute bookings from travelers?
Yes if you have seats available. A traveler looking for a workshop the same day is already motivated to pay and review. On Handsome you can set the minimum lead time (e.g. 2h before the event).
What if a traveler doesn't show up?
Handsome retains the deposit anyway. You do nothing: the system marks the booking as no-show and you receive payment as if it were a regular booking.
Can I provide a certificate in English?
Yes. Handsome automatically generates a bilingual participation certificate with your logo + experience name. Available post-event for every attendee.
